The OV16860 is the first image sensor built on OmniVision's new PureCel Plus-S architecture. This architecture features a larger pixel size and offers a number of pixel performance improvements over traditional 1.12um 16MPsensors. The performance benefits of this new technology include a 33% improvement in full-well capacity, a 40% improvement in low light performance and dramatically reduced pixel crosstalk. Additionally, the OV16860 enables a nominal operating digital voltage (DVDD) spec of 1.0V, and thus requires 40% less power than the previous generation OV16825.
The 1/2.4-inch OV16860 supports high-quality slow motion video capture with full FOV. The sensor capture 16MP images and video at 45fps, 4K2K video at 60fps, and 1080p at 120fps via high speed D-PHY and C-PHY interfaces.
The OV16860 can fit into a 10.5 x 10.5 mm module with a low z-height of 5.8 mm. The sensor is currently available for sampling, and is expected to enter volume production in Q4 2015.

Rice University team is to present a paper "FlatCam: Replacing Lenses with Masks and Computation" at the Extreme Imaging Workshop in Santiago, Chile on Dec. 17, 2015. The research paper is written by M. Salman Asif, Ali Ayremlou, Ashok Veeraraghavan, Richard Baraniuk, and Aswin Sankaranarayanan (CMU) and proposes an imaging system with no lens, somewhat similar to Rambus Lensless Smart Sensors (LSS)."Our FlatCam design places an amplitude mask (with transparent and opaque features that transmit and block light, respectively) almost immediately in front of the sensor array (see Fig. 1). While we focus on a single mask for

Compared to previous generation image sensors, the OV5675 offers improved QE, crosstalk, and power efficiency in a compact package with a z-height of less than 4 mm.
The 1/4-inch OV5695 utilizes 1.4-micron OmniBSI+™ pixel to capture full resolution video in a native 4:3 aspect ratio at 30fps, 1080p video at 30fps, or 720p video at 60fps with support for interlaced HDR (iHDR). The OV5695 supports low power mode, which further reduces power consumption and improves battery life.
The OV5675 and OV5695 are expected to be shipping in volume production at the end of Q4 2015.

Forbes reports that Magic Leap, a Florida-based AR startup, is aiming to secure another round of funding of $1bn at the valuation of $4.5b. So far, the new company has not presented its products, but filed for 153 patents, mostly on display technology.Like any other AR setup, Magic Leap should use a number of cameras to create a map of surrounding area where it embeds its virtual objects. The company's recent Youtube video is said to be "Shot directly through Magic Leap technology on 10/14/15, without the use of special effects or compositing."

EETimes, Phys.org: University of Utah Electrical and Computer Engineering Associate Professor Rajesh Menon has developed a new camera color filter that is said to let in three times more light than Bayer CFA. The new approach is described in an open-access paper in OSA Optica Vol. 2, Issue 11, pp. 933-939 (2015): "Ultra-high-sensitivity color imaging via a transparent diffractive-filter array and computational optics" by Peng Wang and Rajesh Menon.“If you think about it, this [Bayer CFA] is a very inefficient way to get color because you’re absorbing two thirds of the light coming in,” Menon says. “But this is how it’s been done since the 1970s. So for the last 40 years, not much has changed in this technology.”
Menon’s solution is to use a color filter that lets all light pass through to the camera sensor. He does this with a combination of software and hardware. It is a wafer of glass that has precisely-designed microscopic ridges etched on one side that bends the light in certain ways as it passes through and creates a series of color patterns or codes. Software then reads the codes to determine what colors they are.
Instead of just reading three colors, this new filter produces at least 25 new codes or colors that pass through the filter to reach the camera’s sensor, producing photos that are much more accurate and with nearly no digital grain.
“You get a lot more color information than a normal color camera. With a normal camera, you only see red, green or blue. We can do 25 or more,” Menon says. “It’s not only better under lowlight conditions but it’s a more accurate representation of color.” Ultimately, the new filter also can be cheaper to implement in the manufacturing process because it is simpler to build as opposed to current filters, which require three steps to produce a filter that reads red, blue and green light, Menon says.
Talking about small pixel results, the paper says: "As anticipated, the DFA, together with the regularization algorithm, works well for the 1.67μm sensor pixel except at the boundaries of abrupt color change, where crosstalk smears color accuracy. Scalar diffraction calculation estimates the lateral spread of the crosstalk (or spatial resolution) to be ∼13μm. This is approximately three image pixels in our configuration, since one DFA unit cell is 5μm×5μm.
However, in the areas of uniform color (areas #4 and 5), our reconstructions demonstrate negligible distortion and noise. The absolute error between reconstruction and true images averaged over the entire image space is well below 5%. For this object of 404×404 image pixels, it takes roughly 30s to complete reconstruction by regularization without implementing any parallel computation techniques on a Lenovo W540 laptop (Intel i7-4700MQ CPU at 2.40 GHz and 16.0 GB RAM) for simplicity."
Menon has since created a company, Lumos Imaging, to commercialize the new filter for use in smartphones and is now negotiating with several large electronics and camera companies to bring this technology to market. He says the first commercial products that use this filter could be out in three years.

Sony reports its quarterly results: "In the Devices segment, sales increased significantly mainly due to an increase in sales of image sensors for mobile devices and the impact of foreign exchange rates."However, the Devices business forecast for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2016 has been adjusted down: "Sales are expected to be lower than the July forecast mainly due to a decrease in sales of lithium-ion polymer batteries and the impact of a temporary decrease in image sensor production due to a production equipment problem. Although this production equipment problem has been remedied, sales are expected to decrease in the second half of the current fiscal year as well. The forecast for operating income remains unchanged from the July forecast mainly due to the above-mentioned decrease in sales being offset mainly by an increase in productivity and yield in the image sensor business as well as a reduction in costs."
