Samsung Electronics to Exit 8-Inch Foundry Business by 2030

Company notifies customers of shutdown plans, leaving fabless chipmakers scrambling for alternative production capacity

South Korean fabless semiconductor companies that rely on Samsung for chip manufacturing are now scrambling to secure alternative production capacity.

Industry participants are also calling for Samsung Electronics to delay the closure of its 8-inch production lines. They argue that government intervention may be necessary because individual fabless companies have little leverage to change Samsung’s decision to end production.
