Sony's IMX742 image sensor for endoscopes is designed for installation at the distal end of single-use (disposable) medical endoscopes. To help prevent infection transmission and improve workflow efficiency, demand is growing for single-use endoscopes, particularly those that require compact sensor sizes compatible with increasingly small diameter insertion parts, as well as high image quality, stable signal transmission, and other performance improvements.
The IMX742 is a CMOS image sensor that can meet these requirements. It is the first in the industry to achieve 5 m long-distance transmission with an ultra-compact size of 1 mm × 1 mm and a high digital image resolution of approximately 0.51 effective megapixels. The noise resistance and excellent S/N performance that can only be achieved with such digital output allows this sensor to provide high-visibility imaging even in low-light environments. Further, the IMX742 uses proprietary bi-directional communication technology to both reduce the pin count and achieve stable image transmission. This contributes to device miniaturization and improved performance, meaning the IMX742 can be mounted on small-diameter endoscopes that are less invasive for patients during testing and procedures in medical settings.
